Fatigue is a state of sustained exhaustion and decreased capacity of physical and mental work that is not relieved by rest. In most cases, it is due to either physical or psychiatric causes. In the United States each year there are over 10 milliion physician visits for fatigue and it's associated with most chronic and acute illnesses. Providers must distinguish fatigue from sleepiness.

To ensure an accurate results, it's essential that the patient understands the difference between sleep and fatigue.

Fatigue Severity Scale

Total Score
FSS mean score = total of 9 items divided by 9. Mean Score

Interpretation: FSS score > 4 indicates severe fatigue.
