According to the Ottawa Knee Rules, knee x-rays are neccesary only when at least one of the following is present:

  • The patient is over 55 or under 18 years old
  • Tenderness at the fibular head
  • Tenderness over the patella
  • Inability to flex the knee to 90 degrees
  • Inability to bear weight for four steps at the time of the injury or when examined.
